Q: Hey Mark, You mentioned about vegans having higher testosterone, what would be in a vegan diet that keeps testosterone high? As I’ve always been told that fats predominantly saturated eg coconut oil are or egg yolks, butter etc are required for high testosterone. Also zinc which I supplement with currently before bed.
A: It’s hard to say but they measure it and it’s much higher on average. They don’t really know why, just healthier I guess? And the thing with the fats is yeah you need them but MUCH less of it than they’d like us to believe. Basically the minute amounts found in plant based foods are exactly enough and in the exactly correct ratios (omega 3 to 6 and all that. 1:1 ratio)
Q: Cool thanks, so what fats would you advise to keep in the diet? Small amounts of avocado, coconut oil? Thanks
A: No, I’d stay away from those. Flaxseeds every other day and shelled hempseed or English walnuts are healthy. But it’s important you take rather small amounts, even only every other day. I look at it as a supplement and never add them to foods.
Q: Cool thanks, I’ve been trying a low carb diet for two weeks, low fat as well and actually feeling softer/fatter. Any ideas why that could be the case? Cheers
A: Low carb isn’t all that good, it works short term; long term it’s rather ineffective and very unhealthy…
Q: Ok, I read on your blog/site that you have fat loss clients on low carb to begin with. How would you do that on a vegetarian diet? Thanks for the advice.
A: I wouldn’t. They go straight into plant based… U can do it (low carb vegan) but why bother?
Q: Ok cool, what are the best sources of protein for vegetarians and how much protein would you advise per day for fat loss? As some people say you should be getting 2g per pound of body weight.
A: 1 gram per kilo of lean weight. Pea and rice protein, legumes, grains are all good sources. I wrote on this a little more extensively before, here: http://www.markkislich.com/much-protein-day-really-need/
Q: I’ve been using a raw rice protein shake, would that be good?
A: Yep, sounds about right!
