We all keep hearing how omega-6 is bad and omega-3 is good, and how your ratio of 6 to 3 should be like 3:1 or lower.
This seems to be fueling a whole industry of wonder supplements, supposed to do just that: adjust our ratio of omega-3 to 6.
What if… it were as easy as taking one single food occasionally?
But first a little more on omega-6…
Omega-6, they say, INCREASES inflammation! Here’s the kicker though, and it isn’t exactly common knownledge: not ALL Omega-6 is created equal. Meaning there’s different types, some good, some bad, some ugly.
Those found in processed vegetable oils usually are bad or even ugly. They do seem to create a lot of health problems, including systemic inflammation (big problem for the cardiovascular system) and insulin insensitivity. But what about the good one?
It’s called Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), and is apparently great at managing (reducing and controlling) inflammation. So it may keep inflammation down. I say “may”, because there aren’t a lot of studies on that yet. But it sure looks promising.
It’s also supposed to be good for hormone production and to stabilize blood pressure.
Especially interesting for athletes is the inflammation part: both general (systemic) and localized inflammation can increase in those training hard. Sore joints are a part of it, but you need to stay on top of things or else they can get to the point where training is impossible.
That goes for weightlifting, Judo, football, whatever. If things get out of hand, a sore joint can soon turn into a serious injury.
How to prevent that? Foam rolling, massage, stretching….and supplementation. And that get’s us back to omega-6 and the famous 6 to 3 ratio. One food or supplement that’s in perfect balance as far as that ratio, AND that has ample amounts of GLA, is Hemp.
Organic shelled hemp seeds is what I use, only one tbsp every other day: that’s enough. Of course this is subjective, but my sore shoulder (from Judo) felt better almost immediately.
A good brand here in Iceland where price and quality are right is “Himneskt Hampfræ“, it’s the one I use. But of course any quality organic product will do (I prefer the shelled seeds).
